Engineering the Crystallinity of 1D vdW Lattices
Leveraging the intrinsic anisotropy of one-dimensional van der Waals (1D vdW) solids to modulate specific properties requires precise control over crystal faceting in nanostructures and thin film microstructure. However, this is only possible by controlling the various inter- and intrachain interactions and crystal growth directions in 1D vdW solids. We will approach this from a nucleation perspective by developing methodologies based on designed multilayer precursors to nucleate 1D vdW solids with precise control over texture and phase composition, and subsequently grow thin films with controlled microstructure. Beyond 1D vdW phases, we plan on utilizing this approach as a material platform for the discovery of interface-stabilized mixed-dimensional phases.
